It’s a funny one isn’t it, it’s been an education for a lot of people. It’s a difficult pill to swallow that in many cases if you carefully consider your ethics and morals when building your business, you are likely to make less profit/money than people who don’t. But the older I get (and the more money I earn) I’m finding myself wanting to make mindful decisions on what I buy and support. ❤️
Absolutely! It just can't be that hard for her to earn money without going down this cheap, fast fashion road. I think she could've made a big impact with a line a bit like Rosie Huntington Whiteley for M&S which is affordable-but-premium and uses quality fabrics like silk etc.
I just don't understand who's gonna be buying this stuff when the next drop happens?? On TikTok everyone's been posting about how the blazer is pilling after one wear 😮
Absolutely- I love Rosie! I’ve worn it since high school, not the same ones, but they would probably last that long. 😂 There’s a pressure to blow up overnight now with all these launches, I don’t remember anyone else I knew wearing Rosie for a while.
I think she will ignore it, and some people will continue to buy it, it’s wild out here!
I can't believe it's legal to sell clothes online without having their composition information easily available!
I think it's always disappointing when we (generalising here) realise we're an influencer's commodity. To realise Molly Mae doesn't *really* care about how good the materials are or how long the clothes will last, but instead just wants people to buy the products because she's said so, is probably a kick in the teeth for many fans.
I think it IS illegal not to! That’s why (as much as they’re probably loathed to) brands like Zara have to put up their cheap materials, too. But maybe Maebe will get away with it because the materials went up so soon after it sold out. Either way, it’s all VERY money-hungry and classic fast fashion influencer stuff. But I’m glad you liked the piece!! 💓
I’m still in shock that there was no mention of clothing composition until after the stock had sold out, it’s like selling a hot dog to a vegetarian without telling
This is so well written Alanna. I was really disappointed to see the lack of info about materials - it’s one of the first things I’ll look at when buying anything, so to market yourself as a luxury brand and then make the materials unclear screamed sus to me as usually you’d want to show off about the quality of the fabrics you’re using. I personally don’t mind spending more on an item if I know it’s been made well because that way I’d consider it an investment - it’s a shame to see that this isn’t a priority for Maebe. I really like Molly, but I feel like if she wanted to she could educate her fan base about sustainable fashion. So many other brands are making changes, it just looks a little lazy.
Thank you Ella 💓 And same: fabrics are one of the key changes I've made to my wardrobe over the last ten years. These days, I won't even spend £20 on something 100% polester becuase that's actually quite expensive if it's going to break/pill/stretch/smell after a couple of wears??
As for Molly, I agree. I don't think she's a terrible person but I think time's running out on her 'ignorance' with these things (becuase she just can't possibly BE ignorant anymore, there's too much discourse about it). Plenty of celebs do go on to create cool, luxury brands. As you say, it's a shame that she cut corners instead!
I had never heard about Molly Mae before ready this but somehow I'm still disappointed in her. It's always a blow when celebrities you think might want to do the right thing end up just chasing money.
I'll be sticking to Vinted, too. I never watched Molly-Mae on Love Island but had started becoming more and more aware of her over the last few years, to a point where I actually really quite liked her. Was excited to see what she did with Maebe (even though I'm not a huge fan of her fashion tbh), and was equally disappointed! Quite simply the definition of a brand that doesn't have a strong enough reason to be—just the same as everything else. A real let down.
I've always been quite wary of Molly Mae and the 24 hour comment definitely cemented that feeling. As much as influencers unpredictably try to be capitalistic business warriors, it makes me feel sorry that her fanbase is given this treatment. Quite disrespectful of their time and money to be getting this clothing line and actually, I feel like more influencers need to be made accountable for instances like this. It's giving Zoella's advent calendars. They can say they weren't involved in these decisions but if that's what you're putting out under your name, wouldn't you *want* to know everything? So out of touch 💔
Omggg, I'd forgotten about Zoella's calendar!! God that was awful/hilarious.
Totally, plus I feel like these attractive white influencer women get away with so much. It's too easy for them to be like "I didn't know/I wasn't aware/It was my team", and it's kind of like...well, maybe you should have made it your business to know more. Either you're CEO/Creative Director, or you're not. A CEO of any other company wouldn't get away with saying they're not aware of how unethical their practices are!

£140 for a blazer and it's made out of plastic.... Wtf 😭😭
Like…it’s almost funny 😂😂

Great post as always Alanna, thank you!

them what it’s made of. Sigh.
Exactly!! It can’t have been a mistake either, she knew what she was doing 🙄
