Not to plug myself here, but I recently wrote a piece about how much judgement I got for being a Titanic fan when I was growing up as a boy in Australia.

In 2017, I made a promise to myself: save watching Titanic for when there is a chance to go epic.

Most recent watch was last year, ciné concert in with a full orchestra + singers. I cried my ass off with 5000 people.

omg, just make a whole titanic publication 🤣 i loveeee this. rebirthed my nostalgia with how thorough and inclusive you went. personally would put Fabrizio slightly higher ("i go to ameeericaaa" and his wholesome dreams melted me) but 100% the irish charm punched Jack off first. Ah, you gotta do the women list at some point 🥹

Oh gosh, he’s just so lovely isn’t he?? He deserved better than to be squashed by the giant falling chimney lol.

The women’s edition seems to be in high demand, I think I’ll have to do one 😆

Omg I am obsessed with Fabrizio’s character and you’re right he deserved better.

His death in the original script though was brutal. Cal hit him in the head with an oar while Fabrizio tries to climb onto a life boat. The impact splits Fabrizio’s head open. Cal tells him to swim to shore.

WHAT!!!!? Omg, why is Cameron so obsessed with giving him the most grizzly death possible? 😆 I'm glad they didn't use that version tbh, Cal is already evil enough, I feel like that would make him into a cartoonish supervillain!

EXACTLY ! I’m not sure if it’s known why they changed it, but good decision: no one needed that.

my dark side romanticises Cal. All Rosie had to do was say she wanted to travel some and live a little younger when he asked what was bothering her and bruh, they got travel money fr. what's he going around hitting people with oars for? 🤣

In an alternative universe Titanic, Rose would see him hitting Fabrizio with a big wooden stick and make a good Freudian joke about it.

I'll admit I scrolled to the bottom just to see if you had put Jack in first place 😂. I am please you has someone with more rizz than Jack because that was a nice twist. Please do the women next!!!

Alanna Duffield's avatar

Hahah it was a close call! I actually think I might have to do a ‘monthy rizz series’ where I focus on a different film/series/book every time 😆

Yes! Do it! It will be so much fun... Then you can have an all star rizz face off

Okay so THIS is the content I come to Substack for. A quality ranking. Cal is anti-rizz but can he be so non-rizzy that it comes full circle…? Or I just have questionable taste in Titanic men?

Expand full comment
Alanna Duffield's avatar

😂😂😂 I’m so glad! And no I kind of get what you mean?? There’s an arrogance to him that borders on rizzy. “A real man makes his own money” etc. But that kind of rizz just doesn’t hold up in a crisis. That’s when you need the good-hearted heroes!

My other two are Jaws and Avatar! Are they, objectively, the best films I’ve ever seen? No way. But I like what I like 🤣

I think we might actually be the same person?? Titanic is the one film I rewatch on average about 1-2 times a year and it NEVER gets old. There is NO SINGLE OTHER FILM that I have rewatched this much or that can still make me cry on the 30th viewing.

Although, and without caring if I sound like a basic bitch right now, the only true winner of the ultimate rizz competition a la Titanic is Jack Dawson. There are simply no buts or maybes. I see what you've done here, but you're wrong. It's him. It's always been him.

Hahahah I know, it’s honestly timeless and impossible to grow tired of. I remember being younger and getting really excited when it came on “regular tv” rather than watching the DVD. It was like seeing it fresh all over again 😂😂

This list was absolutely perfect and I was thrilled to see all my personal top men in the top 4. Mr Andrew’s might have been number one for me but Tommy is a very solid choice and I adored Officer Lowe and that part STILL gives me shivers

My mom and I, when researching almost anything will say (in a very bad accent) “keep checkin’ em, keep lookin’!!”

Hahahah I LOVE that you use him as a day-to-day reference!

I know—it’s so hard to choose between the top 4. Maybe Tommy Ryan is top for ‘rizz’, but Mr Andrews is who we’d want to marry 😆
