I was thinking the same. With a 9-5 job, waking up early means you have no time in the evening at all which is when most commerce and other businesses are open. It's not like I can go run errands at 5AM before work. Not in my city at least.
Not that aspire to wake up in the middle of the night anyway but even if I did, you're right that it's not really a valid choice for most of us.
I don’t really get why anyone would want to get up at 2.30, like the only thing that changes is when they sleep, not necessarily how much they sleep, so why on earth would you want to go to bed at 7.30? You make a great point about loneliness, this trend really is neoliberalism at its worst. (Also, there’s a German influencer that pops up in my feed sometimes who gets up at 3.30 every day to clean her entire flat (she lives alone), which I find bonkers but also fascinating)
This is really making me laugh because how firstly can a flat get every 24 hours?? 😂 And you’re so right, sleep is still sleep whether you’re getting it at 10pm or 7pm—the only thing that changes is your ability to be awake with others!!
URGH I needed to read this!! I couldn't agree more 🙌🏻 I find myself in a constant cycle of guilt over how much sleep I do or don't get (which ironically, is tiring in itself). But if I evaluate why I feel this way, it unfortunately comes down to the connotations I associate with not getting enough sleep – and that's down to this growing obsession you mention which means I can't open Instagram without seeing at least one reel about someone's sleep/morning routine. Sleep is fab, but surely we don't need to take it to extremes just because someone seemingly more successful is – someone who, may I add, lives a totally different reality to many of us(!). This was a great piece ✨
Ah, thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it 🫶🏼 It’s so easy to start obsessing over sleep these days, both with social media and the tech available to track it 🫠🫠🫠
100%! 🫶🏻 I don't actually have any tech for it myself, but lots of my friends do. And as with everything, there's a fine line – this time between helpful insight/interest and obsession 🙃
Great points, I totally agree. All I can add is that I wish I could sleep better. I'm an insomnia sufferer and I've tried so many things. I'm envious of people who can sleep well, so when these wretched influencers or celebrities are getting up at 2.30, 3.30, it's like 'what are you doing?! if you can sleep longer, do it, not all of us have this option, you numpties!'
Conversely, do you think some insomnia sufferers, or people who are sleep-deprived and groggy use this as either a status or attention-seeking thing? I could be speaking for myself. As a coping mechanism, I like to joke about my lack of sleep and how it negatively affects me by saying stuff like, 'hey, the downside to insomnia is more time to read and write, yay!' but after a certain point, people might be looking at idiots like me and thinking it's just a flex (did I use flex correctly there, I'm a cranky Gen Xer, this word is not used the way I remember from years ago 😂)
Tangential as hell but I feel like pointing out there's not a lot of jobs where you can even be home by seven, let alone actually asleep by then.
I'm usually up on a non-work day by 8:30 or so; Hazel wakes me cause she's hungry by then.
Such a good point!! Reeks of privilege and no responsibilities to be able to choose a sleep schedule that has you in bed that early
It really, really does.

I wake up early and can confidently confirm my life couldn't be less together
Hahahaha this made me snort
